UK Government Sets Decarbonization Targets for Shipping Industry
The UK government has announced new net-zero targets for the shipping industry, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, 80% by 2040, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. To meet these goals, the government will integrate the shipping sector into the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) starting in 2026, requiring large vessel operators to pay for emissions and enabling carbon credit trading. Concurrently, the government has initiated two calls for evidence addressing net-zero ports and the decarbonization of small vessels, inviting expert insights and recommendations from the industry.
